Portland’s rap scene deserves way more credit.
“Rose City GOATS” stands as a powerful collaboration that connects multiple eras of Portland hip-hop culture. The track brings together Cool Nutz, one of the foundational figures responsible for building the city’s rap infrastructure, Dame D.O.L.L.A, the internationally recognized rapper and NBA superstar who elevated Portland’s name globally, and Mikey Vegaz, an independent artist widely respected throughout the Pacific Northwest scene. Together, the three artists represent the past, present, and evolving future of Portland’s rap identity.
“Rose City GOATS” is harder than trying to beat Sonic 2 without Tails. Musically, the song is driven by dark, cinematic production from TOPE, a producer known for crafting soulful soundscapes closely tied to the Pacific Northwest hip-hop aesthetic. The beat carries an ominous tone, creating an atmosphere that almost feels like it would be perfect for a funeral for rivals. The heavy drums and haunting instrumentation help shape the song’s intense and commanding mood.
Lyrically, the track delivers three strong verses that balance confidence with calculated aggression. Each artist approaches the record with an unbothered presence, weaving punchlines and statements about leadership, resilience, and dominance within the rap landscape. I know this might sound crazy to certain people, but I heard some of the best rapping this year here.
Portland is such a dope city.
