Kevin Smiley Recruits NBA YoungBoy For “Matador”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I walked away from this track thoroughly impressed with Kevin Smiley.

I’m really enjoying the current trend of Black artists making waves in country music. Leading the charge is Shaboozey, whose single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has become a major hit. His album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, is also doing exceptionally well.

Another Black country artist to keep an eye on is Kevin Smiley. At just 20 years old, with only three songs in his catalog, he already showcases a remarkably strong voice. His latest release, “Matador,” a major single featuring NBA YoungBoy, highlights his potential to make a significant impact in the genre.

I say this respectfully: If NBA YoungBoy weren’t on this track, it would’ve earned five stars from me. Kevin Smiley delivers a standout vocal performance with undeniable melodies and heartfelt lyrics that delve into heartbreak and the darker moments that follow. The emotional backdrop complements his vulnerability perfectly. NBA YoungBoy’s verse isn’t bad—he adds a gritty edge that contrasts nicely with the rest of the track—but I just wish his flow felt smoother. Regardless, the track is still solid.

Kevin Smiley doesn’t look a day over 15.
