Jaylen Brown is having the summer of his life. Fresh off a championship win, the Boston Celtics forward has been soaking it all in—he’s got a new girl, a massive contract, and some well-earned trophies. While he says it’s time to focus as the season approaches, Brown did manage to cross one big item off his bucket list.
Randomly, a track dropped featuring Jaylen Brown rapping alongside FERG. The song is titled “Just Do It.”
The first thing that grabbed my attention about “Just Do It” was the title. It’s clearly a nod to Nike—a brand Jaylen Brown has had some tension with, particularly over Kyrie Irving’s anti-Semitic situation and his snub from the Olympics. The second standout was how much Jaylen, despite being from Georgia and going to school in the Bay Area, sounds like Larry June on this track. The third eye-catching detail was Jaylen’s line about “touching his girl without touching her”—a likely jab at Kevin Porter Jr., Kysre Gondrezick’s ex. Fourth, Jaylen dropped some pretty clever punchlines throughout. However, one confusing aspect was the inconsistency with censoring—some parts were bleeped out while others weren’t.
FERG closes out “Just Do It” with a sly verse that is not so sly, given that his inside voice is loud as hell. When it’s all said and done, I do rock with how his style and Brown’s style fit over the hella smooth production.
Guys, Jaylen Brown killed this track! (Although, I do wish he sounded a bit more excited to be there.)
