Cordae & Anderson .Paak Unite For J. Cole-Produced “Summer Drop”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The picture up top makes me realize that Cordae looks like a black The Kid LAROI.

Let’s keep it a stack: Cordae has been getting some of the best co-signs in the game for the past few years. Right out of the gate, his first project had guest appearances from heavyweights like Meek Mill, Pusha T, Chance The Rapper, and more. Unfortunately, I feel like his buzz has steadily declined since that debut release.

However, there’s plenty to be excited about regarding his forthcoming album The Crossroads. Not only do I expect him to show growth, but we’ve already heard some solid singles from it. The first was “Saturday Morning” featuring Lil Wayne, and the second is “Summer Drop” with his longtime collaborator Anderson .Paak.

In “Summer Drop,” Cordae and Anderson .Paak reflect on their past summer experiences, recalling the small jobs they worked to save up for fresh clothes, the friends they lost, and the wild situations that escalated as the heat rose like crazy. If you’re Black, their stories will likely resonate with you on a personal level (Unless you’re a Calrton Banks-like muthasucka).

It would be wrong not to mention that J. Cole produced this track. He crafts a choppy, vintage-sounding beat with a soulful sample that somehow feels both melancholic and uplifting. Over it, Anderson .Paak hits us with a punchy, smooth flow that pairs with Cordae’s slightly dark raps excellently. Overall, this collab hits hard for me.

Dropping a track called “Summer Drop” right when summer is about to end is either a flex or a misstep.
