The Weeknd & Playboi Carti Link Up For “Timeless”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Weeknd and Playboi Carti have built quite a rapport over the years.

If we were to rank two of the most anticipated albums of the year, The Weeknd and Playboi Carti’s projects would undoubtedly top the list (alongside A$AP Rocky’s Don’t Be Dumb). While The Weeknd has stayed in the spotlight through a mix of high-profile tours and controversies, Carti has been making waves with sporadic track releases and constant teasing of upcoming ventures across social media and interviews. However, once their albums drop, that’s when we can truly assess whether or not they’ve had a successful year. Today, the two powerhouses have teamed up for a new collaborative single titled “Timeless,” and it’s every bit as epic as fans hoped it would be.

This is the kind of music Neo from The Matrix probably had on whenever he went on a sliding mission. The track, powered by a futuristic, Mega Man-inspired beat, features Playboi Carti delivering a solid verse where he switches between two voices—a regular-sounding one and a high-pitched one—while rapping about his big pockets and quick temper. Then, The Weeknd slides in with his signature airy, intoxicating vocals, complementing his lyrics about being that guy who easily woos women. He also touches on “unaliving” people, which definitely sounds strange coming from a crooning artist. Overall, this is a solid banger that will go hard in laid-back clubs with hookahs and fiery drinks.

I don’t think Playboi Carti and The Weeknd think they are mere mortals.
