Montell Fish’s “CHARLOTTE”: Part two of the most heartbreaking trilogy.

5. Amor

Letting a lover go is never easy.

The album’s theme resurfaces beautifully in “Amor,” where soft guitar melodies and almost humming vocals evoke a sense of romance. However, this “love” song carries a different kind of emotion—it’s a plea, a yearning for reciprocation of the love he feels

As a whole, “Amor” is a soft, melancholic tune with lyrics that express a deep, needy longing for love. I think many of us can relate to that powerful desire for affection, especially from someone we hold dear.

4. Who Did You Touch?

When you know your loved one has moved on, but it’s still so hard to let go.

“Who Did You Touch?” is a deeply somber track. In it, Montell Fish captures the lingering attachment to a mysterious lover, even after she’s moved on. The melancholic sound of the electric guitar adds a raw, emotional edge to the song, enhancing its mood of longing and heartache. The beat shapes how you experience the music, making it more than just a listen—it’s a feeling that resonates long after the song ends.

3. Is it a Crime?

Montell Fish wants to know, “Is it a crime?” to love and lose.

“Is it a Crime?” kicks off with an upbeat tempo, laced with subtle hints of a ’70s disco vibe, which immediately grabbed my attention. It’s fascinating how Montell Fish blends such a vibrant sound with an undertone of yearning. The emotional plea at the heart of the song—asking someone to stay the night or offer love one last time—perfectly aligns with the album’s overarching theme of bargaining with someone on the verge of slipping away. It’s a compelling mix of vibrant energy and emotional vulnerability that makes the song resonate.

2. SCREAM MY NAME

This isn’t what you expect after reading the title— the song reminisces on the past.

This song embodies a heartfelt plea to revive something that’s already lost. Montell seems almost in denial as he begs this unnamed woman to reassure him that she’s still crazy about him. Compared to other tracks on the album, he showcases a deeper, more neutral vocal style that I found particularly enjoyable. Overall, “SCREAM MY NAME” navigates through emotional highs and lows, alternating between the chorus and the verses. The instrumental and vocal climaxes beautifully underscore the song’s desperation, making that feeling palpable for the listener.

1. God or The Devil?

A simple question with not-so-simple implications.

This song captures a different kind of desperation, focusing on the intensity of religious expectations rather than a traditional love story. The struggle is more internal, reflecting a punishing view of higher powers. As someone raised in a Christian environment, I find this perspective particularly intriguing and relatable for those who have experienced religious trauma—it’s a “damned if I do, damned if I don’t” situation, akin to a double-edged sword. The layered vocals create a distorted sound that effectively evokes the conflicted, cry-for-help essence of the song.

RGM RATING

(C+) (78%)

Montell Fish is a talented young artist deeply passionate about music, often weaving in elements of his Christian faith. While some of his songs may diverge from this theme, he embraces the narrative of being a humble child of God. His album CHARLOTTE embodies a grieving, sad boy aesthetic, exploring themes of depression and the emotional struggle to keep loved ones close. My personal rating might be lower than what someone who appreciates slower, more melancholic music would give. However, if you’re a fan of somber tunes from popular artists like Billie Eilish, you’re likely to find this album resonates with you—and perhaps you’ll give it an A+.
