Maur Kii – MAURNB: THE YEAR WAS (Review)

Sometimes what you think is best for you really isn’t…

Maur Kii is a rising R&B artist from Trenton, New Jersey, known for his dynamic vocal abilities and deep passion for the genre. His sound is influenced by artists like Tory Lanez and Travis Scott, offering a modern take on traditional R&B. Maur has studied music at Rider University and the Los Angeles Film & Recording School, and has built credibility in the music scene by opening for big names like Kevin Gates, Migos, and Joe Budden. Maur’s recent project, MAURNB: THE YEAR WAS, marks his return to the music world.

MAURNB: THE YEAR WAS opens with “STREETS,” an intoxicating R&B gem where Maur Kii expresses to a woman he’s interested in why he is the better choice compared to her current partner. The song’s strength lies in Maur’s powerful vocals, which aim to persuade her to choose him instead. Additionally, the hard-hitting, slow-tempo production complements his assertive delivery, making it a force to be reckoned with.

4 THE WEEKEND brings some spice to the project. In the track, Maur Kii prepares for his woman—whom he took from the “streets”—to meet him for a weekend hangout. The tempo is slightly faster than “STREETS,” but it’s just as sensual, featuring Maur’s seductive vocals paired with an old-school R&B beat that could make any girl’s heart feel like it’s sinking in quicksand. Overall, this track is hard to deny.

NAKED is the kind of track that puts you in a trance. In it, Maur Kii uses spellbinding melodies and delicate vocals to emphasize why the woman he’s now fully involved with should abandon her boyfriend for the weekend to clear her mind. His words act as a prequel of sorts to the previous track, 4 THE WEEKEND.” I love how the two songs connect.

In DEEPER,” as expected, things get intense. Maur Kii delivers lyrics meant to make his woman’s heart race—especially with explicit lines about his desires for her body—but the song’s tempo is as slow as it gets. Featuring molasses-like vocals and entrancing melodies, it invites listeners to fully immerse themselves in the experience.

In OPTIONS,” Maur Kii and featured guest Randy White remind their respective women that committing to just one partner isn’t something they’re particularly interested in at the moment. While this may be upsetting for the women involved, at the end of the day, honesty is probably what matters most in these situations. Compared to the other tracks on the album, “OPTIONS” delivers a more energetic vibe, boasting a commercial-ready sound with its punchy hook, uptempo instrumental, and flavorful melodies. Everyone will love this song—except her…

“WHO CRIES IN A MAYBACH?” is a heartfelt ending to this project. In it, Maur Kii reflects on how, after a night filled with luxury and sensuality, the girl he’s with still manages to cry. His passionate vocals perfectly match the song’s deep emotional exploration, while the slow, traditional R&B instrumental gives it a classic, slow-jam feel—though it might be an acquired taste for those who aren’t into that style. Overall, I think this is a strong and fitting conclusion to the project.

MAURNB: THE YEAR WAS is one of the best storytelling projects I’ve heard in recent years. The songs connect extremely well while still maintaining their individuality and appeal. I also think the project showcases diverse vocal styles and flavors of R&B that everyone can enjoy. Overall, I highly recommend giving it a listen.
