Ice Cube is a very angry dude.
I hate the fact that there are several generations who don’t know how cold Ice Cube was. Even though I wasn’t old enough to appreciate his music when it first came out, I did my due diligence by listening to his older stuff, like The Predator. One thing that surprised me about Ice Cube was how brash he was—he didn’t hesitate to call out politicians or tell a cop “f**k you.” To put it simply, he let his planters hang. Apparently, Cube is still the same. This past Friday, the LA rapper dropped a new unapologetic single called “It’s My Ego.”
“It’s My Ego” is powered by a hip-hop beat that sounds somewhat pleasant, with signature West Coast elements and a nice, steady tempo. As for Ice Cube, he sounds anything but pleasant. In his verses, he delivers with aggression, speaking on his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame credentials, his disdain for critics, and his readiness to go rogue if necessary. While his very simple flow might not resonate with today’s hip-hop fans, his rebellious spirit is something to be admired. We need more rap tracks like this today.
When Eminem said “the new Ice Cube” in “The Way I Am,” this is what he meant.
