5. You Ain’t The Only One

Mary J. Blige has some encouraging words for us all.

In “You Ain’t The Only One,” Mary J. Blige tells listeners she’s been through the same struggles we all face. Particularly, she reflects on moments of doubt and feeling worn out from constantly fighting for her happiness. The track is carried by a piano-driven, old-school beat that gives it a timeless feel. While Mary’s voice sounds a bit fatigued on the track, there’s an undeniable authenticity in her tone—like she’s genuinely not faking her despair.

4. Need You More (Ft. Jadakiss)

Whoa, is this Mary’s most heartwarming track ever?

Old-school hip-hop vibes and Mary J. Blige go together like Henny and Coke. “Need You More” taps into that classic sound with a beat so nostalgic, it might just inspire some spontaneous breakdancing. Over this groove, Mary serenades about being loved by someone who knows exactly how to touch her soul and meet her needs. Her vocal delivery, laid-back and effortlessly cool, emphasizes her drama-free, confident vibe.

Jadakiss closes out “Need You More” with an extra raspy verse in which he practically lets his partner know he’s flyer than LaGuardia. I really love how his style meshes with Mary’s.

3. Breathing (Ft. Fabolous)

40 is the new 30, and 50 is the new 40.

“Breathing” samples Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ classic “I Put A Spell On You.” Over it, Fabolous hits us with a punchline-heavy, slick verse highlighting his effortless swag and flair. Mary J. Blige follows with a vintage performance that balances high emotions with a laid-back tone. Lyrically, she reflects on living her best life now that she’s in a better situation. Overall, this nostalgic-sounding track will resonate with Mary’s longtime fans.

2. Can’t Wait For You

If Auntie says you have to hurry your ass up, you have to hurry your ass up!

The first thing that came to mind while listening to “Can’t Wait For You” was Miguel’s “All I Want Is You.” Both tracks boast hypnotic, lush instrumentals and steady drum loops that create an alluring atmosphere. However, that’s where the similarities end. While Miguel’s track explores being captivated by an irresistible love, Mary J. Blige’s “Can’t Wait For You” focuses on the urgency of aligning with her lover emotionally and romantically. The track’s melancholy vibes, paired with Mary’s raw and desperate vocals, deliver a heartfelt performance that is sure to strike a deep chord with listeners.

Mary J. Blige, widely regarded as the queen of R&B, continues to showcase a timeless style in Gratitude. The album pays homage to the soulful R&B and hip-hop fusion that solidified her as a standout artist. Blige pours her heart out with authenticity, exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and everything in between. While some tracks feel formulaic and her voice may not be as sharp as it once was, the essence of her iconic style remains deeply embedded throughout the album, making it a solid reminder of her enduring artistry.
