Rating: 4.5 out of 5.Lil Nas X does whatever he wants.
I’ve done a complete 360 on how I feel about Lil Nas X. When he first emerged, I thought he came across as a basic musician who picked up songwriting skills from YouTube tutorials. However, in the past few years, I’ve heard far too many tracks from him that showcase serious talent, and now I genuinely believe he’s one of the better artists in the music industry today. What I love about his artistry is the unpredictability—he might hit you with country, pop, hip-hop, or even K-pop. Today, the Texas native has returned with a track titled “NEED DAT BOY,” which seamlessly blends a variety of genres.
In “NEED DAT BOY,” Lil Nas X expresses his longing for affection from someone special. Throughout the song, he vents about the frustrations that fuel his anger, such as dealing with fake industry people, which only intensifies his desire for love from the one person who can truly provide it.
The interesting thing about this track isn’t the lyrics; it’s the numerous musical styles woven throughout. Lil Nas X seamlessly transitions from singing gently to rapping aggressively over a range of backdrops, from smooth R&B-infused melodies to a quirky house beat. In fact, there’s a moment where he channels his inner Drake and Latto from “Housekeeping Knows,” repeating “ride, ride, ride” with captivating rhythm and energy.
Lil Nas X isn’t missing, folks.
