Rating: 4 out of 5.Latin-Caribbean vibes, holiday drinks, and an aching heart.
If you’re even mildly familiar with the Latin urban music scene, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Benito Ocasio—better known as Bad Bunny. A true pioneer and leader of modern Latin music, Bad Bunny has ventured into multiple realms of entertainment, from singing and rapping to producing, acting, and even wrestling. His multifaceted career is driven by a deep love for his fans and the craft.
The Puerto Rican megastar currently ranks as the 25th most listened-to artist globally, boasting over 68 million Spotify listeners. His career has been marked by an endless string of hits, from “Diles” in 2016 to the infectious “Tití Me Preguntó” from his 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti. Notably, he became the first non-English-speaking artist to be the most streamed artist worldwide.
His latest single, “PIToRRO DE COCO,” takes on a sound familiar to many Boricuas, and perhaps to all Latinos. The track blends traditional Caribbean Latino music with guitar-driven melodies and a mix of multi-percussion rhythms. Although it’s Bad Bunny’s take on a Christmas/New Year’s song with a hint of heartache, it stands out from his usual style. Despite the melancholic theme of drinking and lamenting over a lost lover during the festive season, the song is undeniably catchy and danceable. The “singing guitar” (as many Latinos affectionately refer to the fingerpicking rhythm) adds a soft, nostalgic, and beautiful layer to the track, making it a perfect tune to play even as you contemplate a lonely holiday season.
