UMG Cancels Grammy Events Due to LA Fires

Despite the tragedy, the show will go on.

While the Recording Academy’s recent announcement confirmed that the 67th Annual Grammy Awards will proceed as scheduled in February, the event may carry a more somber tone this year.

In light of the devastating wildfires that have ravaged parts of Los Angeles over the past week, Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced the cancellation of all its major Grammy events, including the artist showcase and after-party. “Our deepest gratitude goes to the first responders and emergency personnel, who continue to perform heroically,” UMG stated. “L.A. is home to so many of us. We are committed to helping and supporting the music community, our artists, our teams, and the people of Los Angeles get through this horrific episode.”

UMG is not alone in its decision, as Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment followed suit, canceling their plans as well. Both companies have confirmed they will donate funds to aid wildfire efforts and recovery. Despite the cancellations, the show will go on. In a joint statement, the Recording Academy CEOs emphasized, “In close coordination with local authorities to ensure public safety and responsible use of area resources, the 67th Grammy Awards telecast on CBS on February 2 will proceed as planned. However, this year’s show will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours.”
