Doechii Samples Goyte In “Anxiety”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Doechii does whatever she wants.

When you’ve won a Grammy, collaborated with Katy Perry, and been praised by artists like Billie Eilish, you get a green light bigger than Luka Don?i?’s. Right now, that’s precisely where Doechii is. She clearly has the clearance to go off, and she’s taking full advantage of it.

Last night, the TDE artist dropped a somewhat new track called “Anxiety.” I call it “somewhat new” because it’s the solo version of a song she originally recorded with Sleepy Hallow over five years ago.

In “Anxiety,” Doechii bravely takes on one of the most unorthodox and unique hit records of all time, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Over its quirky, almost cartoonish beat, she delivers a vocal performance reminiscent of Ari Lennox, singing with excellent control and a vintage flair. She also drops a few rap verses, spitting with a slightly robotic tone.

Lyrically, she opens up about her struggles with anxiety, describing moments when she feels like she’s being watched. She also expresses a desire for someone solid by her side. The track showcases her versatility and her ability to embrace a bit of eccentricity.
