Ryan Wenze Pours His Heart Out on “When I Want This”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ryan Wenze proves once again that passion and vulnerability are a winning combination in R&B.

If Ryan Wenze and John Legend aren’t brothers, they’re at least kindred spirits in the art of heartfelt delivery. Both artists share that rare ability to make their vocals feel like living, breathing instruments—filled with emotion, precision, and intent. In Ryan’s latest single, “WHEN I WANT THIS,” he wears that passion on his sleeve, using every note to connect, confess, and comfort.

At its core, “WHEN I WANT THIS” tells the story of wanting someone deeply but knowing that love isn’t always enough to heal old wounds. Ryan sings to a partner he genuinely cares about, but the past seems to be standing in the way. When he delivers lines like, “You just had your damage / Damage at a young ages / I wish I could save you / Save you from your past days,” it’s clear this song isn’t about fantasy—it’s about emotional reality.

Production-wise, the track is a smooth blend of gentle instrumentation and a classic 90s R&B groove. It moves with the kind of easy rhythm that once ruled slow jams, while still feeling modern and polished. Ryan’s voice glides effortlessly across the beat, carrying both tenderness and conviction in every line.

Even if he doesn’t win the girl, Ryan is definitely winning new fans with this one.
