On This Day in Hip-Hop Culture (11/2): Takeoff, Metro Boomin

These are the defining hip-hop events that made history today.

1. Takeoff drops “The Last Rocket” (November 2, 2018)

Takeoff’s The Last Rocket was more than just his solo debut (and only) album — it was his moment to prove he could shine on his own after being famously left off “Bad & Boujee.” Not only did he succeed, but the project arguably stands as the best first solo release from the Migos trio. The album also pulled in some impressive numbers, with “Casper” leading the charge. What’s even more telling is that The Last Rocket features no guest appearances, a clear reminder that Takeoff was fully capable of carrying a project all by himself.

Standout Tracks: “Casper,” “Last Memory” & “Infatuation”

2. Metro Boomin Drops “NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES” (November 2, 2018)

Is this my favorite Metro Boomin album? No. But let’s be real — it was stacked like the 2017 Warriors. The project features an all-star lineup including Gunna, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Young Thug, Wizkid, Offset, and of course, Drake. While none of the tracks have stayed in my regular rotation, the production is undeniably top-tier — dark, cinematic, and full of texture. Add in some unforgettable performances like Gunna’s on “Space Cadet” (which has racked up over a billion streams) and Drake’s confident verse on “No Complaints,” and you’ve got a project that easily reminds everyone why Metro’s name holds weight in the game.

Standout tracks: “No Complaints,” “Space Cadet,” and “Don’t Come Out The House.”

3. Nelly’s Birthday (November 2, 1974)

Nelly has a place in all of our hearts because of the party anthems he blessed us with back in the day. Where would the world be without “Country Grammar,” “Ride With Me,” or “Hot in Herre”? Seriously — imagine if Nelly was in his prime during the TikTok era. The man would’ve broken the internet a hundred times over.
