On This Day in Hip-Hop Culture (11/4): Drake, DMX & Diddy

These are the defining hip-hop events that made history today.

1. Drake & 21 Savage drop “Her Loss” (November 4, 2022)

Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss has aged like fine wine. The 16-track collaboration, featuring a lone guest appearance from Travis Scott, remains a masterclass in chemistry. Track after track, Drake and 21 trade verses with effortless precision, serving up a mix of sharp-tongued flexes, infectious hooks, and undeniable energy. It’s definitely one of the best projects in both of their catalogs.

Standout Tracks: “Rich Flex,” “Spin Bout U” & “Major Distribution.”

2. Belly Released In Movie Theatres (November 4, 1998)

Belly has cemented itself as one of hip-hop’s ultimate cult classics. Starring rap legends Nas and DMX alongside Method Man and TLC’s T-Boz, the film captured the raw essence of late-’90s street culture with unmatched style. Directed by the visionary Hype Williams, Belly didn’t just tell a story — it painted one. Its stunning cinematography, iconic lighting, and surreal visuals remain some of the best ever seen in a hip-hop film, solidifying its legacy decades later.

3. Diddy’s Birthday (November 4, 1969)

Diddy’s Birthday — Hate him or love him (and let’s be real, more lean toward the latter these days), you simply can’t tell hip-hop’s story without Diddy. The Bad Boy Records founder was the architect behind some of the biggest anthems the genre has ever seen and helped shape hip-hop culture in ways few could match. While his legacy has undeniably been stained by legal troubles and controversy, his impact on music, fashion, and business remains impossible to erase.
