3. What You Need

Toss some Timbaland adlibs on this song, and it would be PERFECT.

“What You Need” might just be Tems’ most commanding performance yet. Over an old-school-inspired beat with a rhythmic flow reminiscent of Timbaland, she delivers one of her boldest, most passionate, and daring vocal showcases. The track explores the painful realization that a relationship has become unfulfilling, prompting Tems to assert her independence, walk away, and embrace being alone rather than remain in a partnership that no longer serves her. Calling this track striking is an understatement.

2. First

More artists should call the intro to their albums “first.”

“First” hits with punchy Afrobeats production that’s smooth, well-paced, and full of flavor—like it’s been lightly drizzled with palm oil. Over the beat, Tems adopts a relaxed, confident vocal style as she reclaims her personal power, emphasizing self-worth, moving on her own terms, shutting out those who try to control her, and prioritizing herself and her purpose above all else. As the opening track of the album, “First” is immediately addictive and sets the tone perfectly.

1. Big Daddy

Tems, I beg oh, don’t go around calling people who aren’t me “Big Daddy.”

Even with its energetic, vibrant instrumental that balances chill vibes and frantic bursts, “Big Daddy” leans into a slightly disappointing lyrical tone. Tems delivers a free and soaring vocal performance, calling out someone who abandoned her when it mattered most. Flipping the power dynamic, she teases them with the “Big Daddy” hook, reclaiming control while exposing their lack of ambition, sincerity, and worth. Despite the sharp lyrical bite, the track’s infectious hook and relatable subject matter make it an undeniable standout.

Tems’ vocals could solve world hunger.

Tems’ passion when she sings is undeniable—she has a way of delivering performances that could move mountains. While many categorize her as an Afropop singer, her music transcends that label; beyond her Nigerian accent, she crafts R&B that resonates deeply. On this short but impactful EP, she explores a range of production styles—some infused with Nigerian flavors, others channeling vintage R&B vibes with acoustic touches.

Throughout the project, Tems offers bold, passionate, and emotionally hefty vocal performances, tackling themes like self-worth, true love, and fearlessly speaking her mind. Each track feels dynamic and charged with energy, making the EP a vibrant, multifaceted listening experience that delivers a jolt stronger than even the most potent cup of coffee.
