This track was a whole journey.
Logic’s “The Ballad of Rooster Jenkins” is a bold, narrative-heavy track that prioritizes storytelling over traditional song structure. Spanning nearly eight minutes, the song unfolds like a short film, detailing themes of war, slavery, racial integration, and the brutal illusion of freedom in America’s past. The production is slow, hypnotic, and brooding, creating a dark atmosphere that mirrors the weight of the story being told.
The track follows the life of Rudy “Rooster” Jenkins, beginning on a plantation alongside his parents and brother, John. When the Emancipation Proclamation arrives and Rooster turns 22, there’s a brief sense of hope—but that optimism is quickly shattered. Freedom proves to be far more complicated and violent than promised. As conditions worsen, Rooster and John plan an escape, hoping to find a sunken ship rumored to hold money. During their attempt, John is caught and killed, while Rooster narrowly escapes aboard a train heading toward an uncertain future.
The first six minutes play out largely as a monologue, allowing the story to breathe before a beat finally drops. When Logic steps in, his delivery becomes more hopeful and determined, injecting emotional urgency into Rooster’s fight to survive. While its length may keep it out of everyday rotation, “The Ballad of Rooster Jenkins” is an important, impactful listen—one that demands attention and reflection.
