Today marks the anniversary of several significant albums, songs, and moments that helped shape the history of hip-hop, R&B & pop.
1. January 5, 2005: Amerie Released “1 Thing”

“It’s just one thing that got me trippin’!” How legendary was that hook? And honestly, how legendary was Amerie? Every teenage Black boy at the time had a crush on her — that’s just facts.
“1 Thing” sits on one of the most iconic R&B instrumentals ever, loaded with pure pizazz, punch, and those slight go-go vibes (I hate calling it a go-go beat too, but we’ll let it rock for now). After easing us in with the smoother “Why Do We Fall in Love,” Amerie completely switched gears here, going full Little Richard energy — loud, bold, and unapologetically fun.
This song was a moment, and it’s one of those records that simply refuses to age or disappear.
2. January 5, 1980: Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” Becomes First Hip-Hop Track To Reach Top 40

You know what I don’t love? How little respect hip-hop’s pioneers get from today’s artists and even some of the generations that came after them. In leagues like the NBA or NFL, young fans still respect Bill Russell and O.J. Simpson — okay, O.J. might be a bad example, but you get the point. That sense of historical awareness doesn’t always translate in hip-hop.
Without groups like the Sugarhill Gang, there wouldn’t be a wave of young rappers making millions today. Period. On this day in 1980, their catchy, fun, and insanely memorable track made history — and in doing so, opened the door for countless others to make history too. Cheers to the ones who built the foundation.
3. January 5, 1981: Joel Thomas Zimmerman (aka Deadmau5) Was Born.

Your favorite mouse might be Mickey Mouse, but our favorite mouse is deadmau5. Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on this day in 1981, the highly respected electronic DJ and producer has carved out a legendary career on his own terms. While most of his work lives firmly in the underground and electronic worlds, he’s also collaborated with major names like The Neptunes and Skylar Grey, proving his influence stretches well beyond one lane.

Quincy is the creator of Ratings Game Music. He loves writing about music, taking long walks on beaches, and spaghetti that fights him back.
