Kendrick Lamar’s “Section.80” Officially Goes Platinum After 13 Years

Kendrick Lamar’s debut studio album finally receives its long-overdue RIAA Platinum certification.

Kendrick Lamar just added another timeless notch to his legacy. His debut studio album Section.80 has officially been certified Platinum by the RIAA, marking its first certification update in eight years. It’s less a shocking development and more a case of history finally catching up.

While my own Kendrick journey began with good kid, m.A.A.d city, for many listeners Section.80 is where the story truly starts. This was the moment Kendrick emerged as more than a promising lyricist. He arrived as a clear-eyed narrator, cultural critic, and voice for a generation grappling with identity, addiction, faith, and systemic pressure. No matter where it ranks in his catalog, calling Section.80 a classic feels fully earned.

Released July 2, 2011 through Top Dawg Entertainment, the album debuted modestly, selling roughly 5,000 copies in its first week. But its impact was never about first-week numbers. It grew organically, passed from dorm rooms to car speakers, fueled by tracks like “A.D.H.D.,” “Rigamortis,” and “HiiiPower,” which showcased Kendrick’s precision, urgency, and intellect.

With contributions from GLC, BJ The Chicago Kid, and Ab-Soul, the album added texture while keeping Kendrick firmly at the center. In hindsight, Section.80 reads like the blueprint for everything he would later refine. Its Platinum certification is a reminder that some albums don’t erupt overnight. They simmer, endure, and eventually, they last.
