The surprise single hints at a bold, experimental direction ahead of Don Toliver’s upcoming album “OCTANE.”
Don Toliver just flipped the hip-hop calendar on its head by casually announcing a brand-new album, OCTANE, dropping next week. No long rollout, no dramatic countdown, no time to emotionally prepare.
From what’s been floating around, Don is experimenting on this project like a mad scientist who unplugged the safety alarms. To give us a preview of that energy, he dropped the new single “ATM.”
“ATM” rides on bass-heavy, slick, almost intergalactic production that feels designed to knock the toupee off your old-ass daddy’s head. The beat knocks, but it also floats, giving Don space to mess around vocally.
Throughout the track, he switches up his delivery, sometimes sounding like a Black Marvin the Martian, sometimes drifting into Travis Scott territory, and other times tapping into an underrated soulful bag that makes the song stick.
The result is an action-packed track that feels unpredictable and intentionally left-field. It doesn’t sound like something chasing radio spins, and that’s the appeal.
If this is what OCTANE is going to sound like, I’m going to need a couple Four Lokos and magic markers to understand s**t.
