Stove God Cooks Embraces Grit and Soul on “Welcome To My Garden”

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Stove God Cooks is one of one. Seriously, who’s rapping like this?

Is Stove God Cooks’ stock any higher than it is right now? That likely depends on what he does with his next project, GOAT STAMP, which is set to arrive soon. We’ve already heard a few tracks from the rollout, including “El Pueblo” and “Goat Stamp,” but it’s still unclear how strongly they connected with listeners. With his new single “Welcome To My Garden,” though, Stove God looks ready to keep all eyes and ears locked in.

On “Welcome to My Garden,” Stove God Cooks reflects on how money changed him, the illegal moves he made to get it, and his rough come-up, which likely pushed him toward hustling in the first place. The production is interesting as hell, built around an eccentric, soulful sound that feels like it was plucked straight from a 1970s flower garden. Kudos to Swizz Beatz for leaning into something that weird and memorable.

As expected, Stove God Cooks blends raw grit with strained, off-kilter singing, sounding like a junkie willing to croon for spare change. It’s very much an acquired taste, but that edge is part of the appeal. If this track is any indication, his upcoming album is about to be wild.

Why do most of my Uber drivers in DC sound like Stove God Cooks?
