A timeless, soul-baring performance that lingers long after the final note.
There have only been a few times in my life when I have been absolutely blown away by an artist after just one listen. Kareen Lomax is one of those artists.
Hailing from Atlanta and now based in LA, Kareen has a rich voice, verses filled with substance, and a sound that feels completely timeless. Recently, she released a six-track EP called ijan, and when I tell you it is perfect, I am not lying at all. One of the best tracks from it is “somewhere in the world.”
“somewhere in the world” gets its magic from a vintage-sounding, extra-pleasant instrumental that carries a slight edge at times. Overall, the backdrop is impossible to hate (Kudos to Daoud). Over it, Kareen bares her soul, singing with deep emotion and delivering stunning melodies, especially on the chorus. She also shows restraint, allowing the instrumental to shine when needed and getting lost in it in the best way.
Lyrically, Kareen touches on something rarely discussed after a break-up: wishing the person you left behind is not completely dead to you, even if they have moved on. She also reflects on holding herself together amid loss and stress. The track flows beautifully, is dangerously real, features a memorable hook, and showcases one of the most breathtaking vocal performances you will hear.
