Lil Twist & Lil Wayne Reunite on “Addict”

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Lil Twist is back to being Lil Wayne’s backup quarterback.

Lil Twist and Lil Wayne come together on “Addict,” delivering a fresh hit of Young Money nostalgia for longtime fans. Lil Twist, once positioned as one of the youngest faces of the label, bears a strong resemblance to Wayne, so naturally it was assumed he would be his successor. It hasn’t happened yet, but there is still time.

“Addict” rides on production that fuses gentle piano melodies with sultry R&B tones and crisp trap percussion. The result is a hypnotic backdrop built to make clothes come off and speakers to absorb more contact than Nikola Jokic. Lil Twist leans into an emotional, autotune-heavy delivery, floating over the beat as he reflects on attraction and the pull of a certain type of woman who dominates his attention.

Lil Wayne, who is probably the person who will make people press play on this track, comes through with a steady flow, slick delivery, and his signature off-the-wall punchlines. He frames his verse around being drawn into an addictive relationship dynamic, all because he laid it down properly.

All in all, though the track has some solid rapping and catchy moments, it might sound just a bit too 2010-ish to fully embrace.
