Right before LUCKI’s biggest release ever, he decided to give us an appetizer.
LUCKI is gearing up to release his highly anticipated new album, Dr*gs R Bad. The title alone grabs attention, but so does the timing: it’s set to drop the same week as Drake’s ICEMAN. If I were a betting man, I’d say LUCKI is likely to land the second-most-streamed hip-hop project that week, which is still a strong showing in a heavyweight matchup.
Ahead of the May 15 release, LUCKI dropped DaysB4Bad*, a five-track project that offers a preview of what Dr*gs R Bad might sound like. For someone not deeply familiar with his catalog, it’s a surprisingly compelling entry point.
Across the tape, LUCKI’s delivery can feel intentionally subdued, almost like he’s running on low battery, but the production tells a different story. The beats are action-packed, energetic, and well-constructed, giving his laid-back cadence a strong foundation. His rapping is controlled and confident, touching on everything we want to hear out of a rapper: Money, women, and violence.
What stands out most is his range. He shifts between melodic stretches, more introspective struggle talk, and detached, effortless flexes that feel like he’s above the noise around him. All in all, DaysB4Bad* works well as an introduction and a warm-up, setting the tone without overextending itself.
