Tommy Richman Leans Into Breezy Pop Sounds on “Changes”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Tommy Richman blends breezy pop production with emotional reflections on family struggles throughout “Changes.”

Tommy Richman continues moving further away from straight hip-hop sounds on “Changes,” a track that leans heavily into upbeat pop and alternative influences. Ever since “Million Dollar Baby” exploded, Tommy has made it pretty clear that he wants to experiment stylistically, and this latest release doubles down on that approach.

The song is powered by sunny, feel-good production that honestly sounds tailor-made for sipping a mojito somewhere near the ocean. The instrumental has this light, breezy energy to it, while Tommy delivers cheerful and blissful vocals that almost make it sound like he is skipping across the beat. Lyrically, the track centers around trying to understand what is bothering someone you care about while also touching on family struggles connected to his mother’s health. At one point, he even interpolates David Bowie’s classic “Changes,” adding another layer to the song’s reflective feel.

Even though social media seems determined to hate on Tommy Richman right now, I honestly think the track is solid. It may not fully connect with everyone, but the vibe is undeniable.
