Olivia Rodrigo continues her impressive commercial run.
Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is projected to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with over 300,000 units sold in its first week, according to early projections from Hits Daily Double. That’s an excellent number by almost any standard.
That said, I expected a little more.
Maybe that’s unfair. After all, Olivia is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet right now, and the album rollout included successful singles like “drop dead” and “the cure,” which have already accumulated over 200 million and 96 million streams, respectively. With that kind of momentum, I thought we might be looking at something significantly larger.
Still, context matters. you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is on pace to outperform SOUR‘s 295,000-unit debut and land right around the same territory as GUTS, which opened with 302,000 units. That’s pretty damn consistent.
The album will also rank among the biggest debuts of the decade, trailing only a handful of blockbuster releases from artists like Noah Kahan, Harry Styles, Drake, and BTS.
Maybe the splash wasn’t as massive as I expected, but the results remain undeniably impressive.
