Lil Baby finally stopped playing defense and started cooking again in “Dead Fresh.”
I think we’ve reached a point where anything Lil Baby releases is going to be met with skepticism. No matter what he does, people seem determined not to be impressed. However, one thing about Baby is that he’s going to keep swinging until he gets everyone’s attention again. With “Dead Fresh,” he makes a strong case simply by stepping outside of his comfort zone.
Produced by Pharrell, “Dead Fresh” features a beat that has a smooth bounce while also carrying those unmistakable atmospheric elements that Pharrell has mastered throughout his career. Over the production, Lil Baby sounds refreshed, experimenting with different flows, tones, and pockets that showcase more personality than we’ve heard from him recently. He switches between confident, braggadocious moments and slicker, more laid-back deliveries while talking about investments, luxury, success, and attracting the finest women.
More than anything, the biggest takeaway is how loose Lil Baby sounds. There’s a level of freedom here that has been missing from some of his recent releases. “Dead Fresh” feels like a reminder that Baby still has plenty of tricks left in his bag.
