5. Stay With Me

I love it when Dave East starts talking his s**t, and “Stay With Me” gives him the perfect opportunity to do exactly that. He attacks the beat with that signature “I’ll be smizzled” delivery while making it crystal clear that his competition is several games behind him in the standings. Just as impressive is Harry Fraud’s production. The beat carries an old-school, haunting vibe that feels so timeless it sounds like prime JAY-Z would’ve put the s**t through a mattress.

4. Clyde Frazier

This is one of those tracks you really need to lock in for. I’m glad Dave East placed it right in the middle of the album because it feels like the emotional centerpiece. The first thing that grabbed me was Harry Fraud’s production. It has this soulful, Sunday morning-on-the-block vibe that’s nostalgic af.

Dave does the rest by simply speaking from the heart. Whether he’s reflecting on conversations with JAY-Z, the cars he’s purchased, his mental health, or navigating life in the streets, everything feels genuine. More than anything, it sounds like Dave using the record to unload everything that’s been weighing on him.

3. Alley Oop (Ft. Styles P))

I love it when two underrated rappers from the same city come together, and that’s exactly what happens on “Alley Oop.”

My favorite part of the track is actually the production. It has this militant, hard-hitting energy that almost had me saluting my damn headphones. Dave East also delivers one of the smoothest choruses on the album, while Styles P slides through with that effortless OG swagger, sounding completely unbothered as he helps bring the track home in style.

2. Follow My Lead (Ft. Snoop Dogg)

“Follow My Lead” features Snoop Dogg and Dave East, but the real star of the show is Harry Fraud’s production. This beat punches harder than Draymond, yet it still carries this classy, luxurious feel thanks to its gorgeous piano melodies. Honestly, the instrumental alone is worth pressing play for.

Snoop slides through with a wise, laid-back verse delivered in the slowest flow imaginable, while Dave East keeps things cool, reflecting on the work he’s put in and how his upbringing shaped the way he moves today. I think it’s a very damn good collaboration all-around.

1. Everything Is Up (Ft. Benny The Butcher)

I’m not going to lie, the second Benny The Butcher jumped on this track, I was all the way in. Not just because he absolutely smoked his verse, but because everything leading up to it was already clicking. Harry Fraud lays down this hypnotic beat with an almost ancient Egypt-type vibe, while Dave East delivers thoughtful bars about grinding his way to success. Benny comes in at the end with a punchy, no-nonsense verse that puts the perfect finishing touch on the record.

One thing you can always count on when Dave East and Harry Fraud link up is authenticity. Like, you won’t see a Dave East or Harry Fraud track on TikTok. Instead, they continue leaning into the formula that has always worked for them: gritty street rap paired with elite production.

Harry Fraud deserves a ton of praise for what he does on Price Of Pain. From soulful loops and haunting samples to hard-hitting drums, every instrumental feels like they were carefully crafted in a damn Louis Vuitton lab to complement Dave East’s style. Whether the beats sound luxurious, cinematic, or grimy, they consistently give Dave the perfect space to reflect on his upbringing, losses, victories, and the realities of street life. I would easily give the production an A+.

Dave East sounds completely at home throughout the album. His storytelling remains sharp, his confidence never slips, and he delivers the kind of wisdom that has made him one of New York’s most dependable lyricists. The guest appearances from Benny The Butcher, Styles P, Snoop Dogg, AZ, Don Jiggy, Cruch Calhoun, and SUZI all add value, mainly giving tracks that nice little boost they need to get to the finish line.

I stopped reviewing Dave East’s albums a few years ago because he was dropping so many, I couldn’t keep up. Reviewing this project reminded me exactly what I was missing.
