This is impressive given the album features mainly old material.
Nipsey Hussle and Bino Rideaux’s PROLIFIC debuts at No. 21 on this week’s Billboard 200 with 28K units sold, which I think is a very solid showing given the story behind the project.
PROLIFIC reportedly dates back to around 2017, meaning some of this music could be almost a decade old. The 15-track project features Static Major, Buddy, James Fauntleroy, Leon Thomas, Ty Dolla $ign, and Cardi B, giving fans a pretty stacked guest list alongside Nipsey and Bino.
To put the numbers into perspective, Nipsey’s final major project, Victory Lap, debuted with 53,000 equivalent album units in 2018. Yes, PROLIFIC is considerably lower, but I don’t think these two releases should be compared without considering the circumstances. One was a major new album from an artist at the height of his career, while the other is reportedly music created years before its release.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love how Nipsey Hussle’s estate has handled his posthumous music. They clearly have unreleased material, but they’ve been taking their time instead of flooding the market.
Long live Nip. It’s a damn shame his career was cut short.
