Apparently, indie Wiz wasn’t killing it enough…

Wiz Khalifa recently said that being independent isn’t for him. That excites me because I’ve always believed major-label Wiz was as good as any A-lister in rap. Now, he has released his first single since making those comments, and it’s called “Yiccen.” The track also arrives ahead of his upcoming EP, ’COOL AZZ SUMMER.’

“Yiccen” features chill, Memphis-inspired production driven by a screwed-up sample that immediately pulls you in. Over it, Wiz delivers an effortless rap performance filled with relentless flows, a cool delivery, and one of his catchier choruses in recent memory. He sounds completely comfortable, never pressing too hard or trying to turn the track into something bigger than it needs to be.

Lyrically, Wiz sticks to the subjects that have always worked for him: getting bread, keeping women locked in, spending money on luxurious shit, and, of course, smoking some good oohwee. None of this is unfamiliar territory, but his charisma keeps everything entertaining. “Yiccen” is something slight, yet it is also ridiculously catchy and easy to replay. If this is the energy Wiz plans to bring to ’COOL AZZ SUMMER,’ the upcoming EP should be a smooth, enjoyable listen.
