Chicago feels like a war zone. Every day brings another horror story about opps fighting opps, almost giving us an early preview of every terrifying movie arriving in October. If you ask me, though, Polo G’s tender approach to music might be what the city needs.

Last night, he returned with “Still Standing,” a new single that finds him making a slight but effective change to his sound. The production carries plenty of soul, but it also hits with booming bass and a tempo that keeps everything moving. Polo responds with an urgent, aggressive melodic approach that sounds familiar enough to satisfy longtime fans while still pushing him somewhere fresh.

Lyrically, he reflects on his years trapping, spanking s**t in the streets, and overcoming the hardships that could have knocked him completely off course. He does not soften those memories, but the soulful backdrop gives them an emotional weight that keeps the track from becoming empty tough talk.

That contrast is what makes “Still Standing” work. Polo sounds forceful without abandoning the vulnerability that has always separated him from many of his peers. The track introduces a new wrinkle to his style, and thankfully, it fits him extremely well.
