Whether you like it or not, DDG is a leader of the new school.

I would be completely lying if I told you I understood everything happening within this generation of music. Half the time, I feel like I need a translator, a streaming subscription, and somebody’s teenage cousin to explain what is going on. However, I will give today’s artists credit for one thing: They are versatile as hell and constantly willing to link up to create something different.

DDG embraces that collaborative spirit throughout his latest project, Hit-A-Thon. Instead of making himself the only attraction, he gives an extensive lineup of artists room to shine. Real Boston Richey, Babyfaxe E, Seddy Hendrinx, Bunna B, Lil Yachty, ian, Domani, King, and OMB Peezy are among the guests helping the project move through several pockets of modern rap and R&B.

With artists from Detroit, Atlanta, Florida, and beyond involved, Hit-A-Thon never remains in one place for long. Different flows, melodies, personalities, and regional influences keep entering the picture, allowing DDG to operate as both a performer and curator.

The lengthy guest list occasionally makes the album feel more like a showcase than a focused statement. Still, hearing this many emerging voices receive opportunities is pretty dope. Even if this generation occasionally confuses me, Hit-A-Thon demonstrates how exciting its willingness to experiment can be.
