Leon Bridges sounds like a man in a damn good mood. Last night, the Texas singer returned with his fifth studio album, Happiness Anytime, and the project is every bit as warm and feel-good as its title suggests.

Across 12 tracks, Bridges delivers breezy vocals, soothing production, and positive lyrics without making any of the happiness feel fugazi. It is the kind of album made for a beautiful road trip through the South, with the windows down and enough wind hitting your face to make you forget about your problems. If you happen to take a damn ’shroom beforehand, just let the music carry your brain somewhere peaceful (Hopefully you aren’t driving when this happens).

J Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto of Jungle produced the album, and their chemistry with Bridges works exceptionally well. They preserve the old-school soulfulness that has always suited his silky voice while introducing more movement through Afrobeat, Brazilian music, disco, and other rhythmic influences.

Lydia Kitto also provides the album’s only credited guest appearance on “All Day, All Night.” However, Bridges remains the undeniable centerpiece throughout.

The combination of timeless soul, silky singing, and genuinely uplifting energy makes Happiness Anytime an easy listen. Our favorite tracks are “The Way It Goes,” “Talk It Over,” and “Light the Way.”
