Early-2000s production and soulful vocals soundtrack a toxic relationship that still carries real potential.
TOMA and I am TIM may have created something timeless with “Dysfunctional.” The track highlights how creative their minds are while leaning into production that feels like a welcome blast from the past.
Clocking in at less than two minutes, “Dysfunctional” does not waste a second. The instrumental has a lively bounce, a comfortable tempo, and the kind of warm R&B flavor that takes me directly back to the early 2000s.
Though the writing is poetic and elegant, it doesn’t necessarily sound all mushy and s**t. TOMA and I am TIM examine a toxic relationship where perfection might be possible if two people can finally establish the connection that keeps slipping away. There is hope in their words, but plenty of frustration sits beside it.
The hook is easily one of the track’s best features. Its infectious melody and soulful delivery carry a slight John Legend feel, especially when the layered vocals settle over the bouncy production.
“Dysfunctional” is short, creative, beautifully written, and ridiculously catchy. TOMA and I am TIM understood exactly what they wanted to make, and they got the job done before the two-minute mark.
