The first song for Sunrise on the Reaping is out, and Noah Kahan never fails to impress.
The Hunger Games movies always have great music, and Sunrise on the Reaping definitely won’t be any exception. Noah Kahan has joined the ranks of Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Coldplay, Lorde, and Olivia Rodrigo as the voice of the newest installment in the popular dystopian franchise.
Without spoiling the book, “Draw You Out” is about grief. It’s about the experience of losing someone, and the closest you can be to being with them is by following their dying wishes, going to places they’d go, and doing something as small as saying their name. The speaker doesn’t feel complete without the one he’s singing to. Without them, all the plans they’d had for a life together have fallen apart.
No one does an indie folk ballad like Noah Kahan. His lyrics are absolutely stunning, and I love his voice. My favorite lyric is “I was born with someone else’s face / A coward’s anger and a fighter’s rage.” It says so much with so few words. The contrast between a coward’s anger, which stems from fear or insecurity, and a fighter’s rage, which is violent and passionate, is so simplistic, but it immediately paints a vivid picture of the character.
I love how Noah was able to create a song that is both distinctly about Haymitch and can be so easily related to. Everyone has lost someone, everyone feels like they don’t know themselves sometimes, and everyone feels like a coward every now and then.
“Draw You Out” is both a show of Noah Kahan’s skill and an exciting glimpse into the soundtrack of Sunrise on the Reaping. I can’t wait for what other music is coming out of this movie.
Earlier this year, Noah released his album The Great Divide.
