I bet this song goes extra hard when paired with some candles and Henny.
Last November, Jay Activist released a nine-track project called You Knew What This Was, and it feels like one long vibe. Throughout the project, the Southside Atlanta artist blends hip-hop and R&B creatively, slipping into his melodic bag whenever the moment calls for it. One of its clearest standouts is “Tonight.”
“Tonight” moves through gentle production that combines smooth R&B elements, an easygoing rhythm, unbelievable synths, and a subtle hip-hop knock. It sounds made for the ride home from the club, especially when the night is not quite finished and things in the car might get steamier than a sauna.
Jay approaches the beat from two angles. At certain points, he leans into infectious melodies that bring out the soulful side of his sound. Elsewhere, he turns into a slick, completely unbothered playa who refuses to let romantic adversity disturb his mood.
Lyrically, Jay explores the unique connection he shares with a woman, including moments that get spicy both physically and vocally.
Between the dreamy production, smooth confidence, and memorable melodies, “Tonight” is exactly what a late-night hip-hop and R&B gem should sound like.
