Crushes Sound Fun in Emme’s New Song “don’t usually go out”

Emme - don't usually go out

Emme delivers fun indie pop about a crush bringing her out of her comfort zone with her new song “don’t usually go out.”

Emotions can make us do surprising things, can’t they? On “don’t usually go out,” Emme talks about just that. She doesn’t usually go out, but the feelings she has for someone cause her to go out of her comfort zone and have “a Friday night she’d never choose,” but she’ll do anything for the person she’s singing about.

Emme’s vocals are lovely, and the melody is infectiously catchy. I love her mix belt rather than a full-on pure belt. It’s a beautiful quality, and it complements the production well. It’s a synth-driven, midtempo track with an upbeat but repetitive bassline. The production is interesting, but it primarily highlights her voice, along with the quickened heartbeat she has when the subject of the track is around. I love it when a track’s production enhances the meaning of the lyrics, and “don’t usually go out” fits that perfectly.

This is the kind of song that you should immediately send to your friend with a crush, particularly if they’re a pop fan who usually stays in. Emme reminds me of Maisie Peters and Conan Gray on this track.

With or without a crush, though, it’s a great song for any playlist. It’s definitely going on my “driving to pop music” playlist immediately, and I’ll save it for any character-based playlists that I may make as an actor or writer, since I love creating those. This will definitely fit.
