Florence Road’s New “Wish Upon You” is Flawless Indie Rock

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Florence Road - Wish Upon You

Florence Road never fails to disappoint, and their new song “Wish Upon You” is one of their best yet.

I first became a fan of Florence Road when I saw them open for my other favorite band, The Last Dinner Party. I’m obsessed with all of their discography, but “Wish Upon You” is one of their best yet. Apparently, they hadn’t even planned on making it. It just happened in the studio during a recording session for a different song, and I’m very glad it did.

“Wish Upon You” is a love-adjacent song. While there’s love and longing, it’s also really painful. Lily is “half herself” now, and is always second-guessing her interactions with the subject. The lyrics alternate between the seemingly romantic and the painful, and it beautifully illustrates the inner conflict that Lily is feeling in the song.

They described it as a love song, but it reminds me of their track “Rabbits Can Swim” from their EP Spring Forward in that the love portrayed is very complicated. There’s an insecurity in it, which is an interesting choice for a love song.

Musically, it’s the perfect indie rock song, with amazing playing and interesting vocal arrangements. It’s undeniably Flo Ro, but it has hints of The Cranberries, Fleetwood Mac, and Olivia Rodrigo as well, whom they’ve cited as influences before.
