Nas challenges artists and executives to remember their purpose instead of simply following trends.
Nas has been working on new music, but he’s also been paying attention—and he has something to say about where the culture is headed.
In a message to fans, artists, creators, and executives, the rapper revealed that he’s spent the past year observing the industry while recording. Those observations have him thinking about the people who built the foundation and whether they’re receiving the recognition and compensation they deserve.
“The music game forgets or doesn’t compensate the foundation,” Nas wrote. “Our greats have been stolen from and ripped off of.”
That’s a serious point coming from someone whose work has helped shape generations of rappers. Celebrating influence is easy when it means quoting a lyric or borrowing a sound. Making sure the people behind those contributions benefit is a different conversation.
Nas also challenged the focus on chasing whatever is popular, saying music shouldn’t be created simply for a trend. He urged people to remember their purpose, contributions, and creative history.
Personally, I’m curious to hear how this perspective makes its way into his new music. Nas has tackled these conversations before, especially on his controversial Untitled album, where he stood firmly behind his community. He’s never needed much encouragement to say what he feels. Maybe this time around you get more fire from him.
He signed off with “Nasir Jones. BLAK MUSIC 2026.” That leaves room for speculation, but the message doesn’t confirm an album title, release date, or tracklist. For now, Nas is creating—and asking the industry to remember its foundation. Unfortunately, the upcoming project probably won’t feature Hit-Boy.
