Listening to “Baby” sounds like going to the mall in 2016. The Chainsmokers are so tied to that era.

That Chainsmokers 2016 electropop is so iconic, and The Chainsmokers brought it back with “Baby.”

“Baby” is an electropop/EDM-infused pop track about missing an ex. His ex used to call him baby, but now he’s just stuck scrolling past her photos on social media. He wonders if she thinks about him, too.

Some music can really take you back. I didn’t realize how much their sound would take me back until the song started playing. I was immediately transported to my local mall in middle school. It’s impressive to be able to tie your sound so directly to an era, and to stay consistent in it without following trends that don’t mesh with your musical identity.

This track follows the duo leaving Columbia and Disruptor Records after eleven years to become independent artists. They announced the decision on Tuesday, October 13th. I wonder what creative decisions will change now that they’re fully independent, and how their sound may change as a result.

“Baby” is a solid track. It isn’t their most iconic song—I’d give that to “Closer” with Halsey or “Something Just Like This” with Coldplay—but it’s solid. It would be fun to dance to, and it’s nice to have one of the nice things about 2016 come out.
