“The Greatest Show On Earth” is a triumph for U2.
U2 has such a recognizable sound that even when you don’t know the song, you know exactly who made it. “The Greatest Show On Earth” couldn’t be mistaken for anything but a U2 track, and I mean that in the best possible way.
The song is the third single from their upcoming LP, Carnaval De Luz. The band has also announced a 2027 tour sharing the single’s title.
The Edge’s guitar sounds as bright as ever, while Bono’s voice remains unmistakable. You can hear a little more age in it, but there’s no confusing him with anyone else. The song begins quietly and gradually builds toward a cathartic ending. It’s beautifully constructed.
I appreciate that U2 isn’t trying to sound like anybody else. They have the talent and identity to keep doing their own thing, and it still works. The playing, singing, and songwriting are all strong here, with each element contributing to that final release.
Simply put, “The Greatest Show On Earth” captures everything that makes U2, U2.
