Meek Mill and G Herbo Reflect on Struggle and Success on “Wanna Be Free”

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Meek Mill really goes on epic rants.

Meek Mill has been a lot more active these past few weeks, but the releases still feel pretty sporadic. Maybe he’s heating up. Either way, he’s back with a new single called “Wanna Be Free,” featuring his old buddy G Herbo. These two already know how to bring the struggle to a track, so the pairing makes sense before you press play.

“Wanna Be Free” features dramatic production that might f**k around and have the street dudes with PTSD shedding tears. Over it, Meek and Herbo reflect on their rough come-ups while also getting into the luxurious lives they’re living these days. The contrast gives their flexing some context. You’re hearing about the success, but they aren’t letting you forget what came before it.

If you’re a fan of struggle raps combined with gritty street deliveries, you’ll probably rock with this. Both sound comfortable getting those thoughts off, and the production fits the weight of the subject matter. It’s the kind of pairing that doesn’t need much explaining.

Here’s my warning to you, though: This s**t is five minutes long. My God. I appreciate the storytelling, but make sure you’ve got some time before pressing play.
