Kid Rock and Lil Wayne Take Listeners to Church on “7 Sins”

Rating: 2 out of 5.

A warm Christian rock collaboration pairing Kid Rock’s earnest vocals with Lil Wayne’s slick, melodic flow.

Kid Rock has dropped ’Halfway 2 Jesus,’ a 17-track Christian album. I wouldn’t normally spend much time covering his music, but the project features Eminem and Lil Wayne, so here we are. “7 Sins” brings in Wayne after Eminem was originally expected on it. Em appears on “Heal My Faith” instead.

The track almost feels like religious recruitment music. You get a warm instrumental that sounds made for older folks to clap their hands and shake maracas in perfect agreement. It’s gentle, welcoming, and about one announcement away from asking everybody to stay for refreshments after the service.

Kid Rock delivers a melody that’s supposed to sound passionate and powerful. To me, he sounds like somebody who discovered the Holy Ghost a few minutes ago and immediately asked for the microphone. I hear the enthusiasm, but his performance doesn’t make me want to join in.

As expected, Lil Wayne doesn’t save the track. However, his slick bars, solid melodic flow, and little bit of edge make the appearance worth checking out. I think his verse does its job; I just wish the rest gave me more. “7 Sins” is listenable, but I don’t see myself returning to this particular pew.
