Jessie Reyez Gets Caught Between Desire and Heartbreak on “SOVEREIGN LAND”

Rating: 4 out of 5.
Jessie Reyez

We’re in the messy reality of wanting someone you know you should leave alone.

“SOVEREIGN LAND” is the third single Jessie Reyez has dropped recently, and it’s honestly fire. She sings about the struggles of present day dating, and actually wanting to be with someone she’s already dated before. She’s on some toxic mess, checking his Instagram stories on the low and hoping he hits her up, but honestly, she’s just hurting herself more because she knows that isn’t going to happen. Miss girl, CLOSE THE APP.

Jessie goes back and forth throughout the track between trying to pull her thoughts away from this person and trying to justify why what they had was different. And honestly, she’s valid for being torn up about it. Sometimes, you know a relationship is over, but your feelings haven’t caught up with reality yet. You find yourself romanticizing the good moments, wondering if they miss you, and looking for little signs that maybe there’s still something there. Even when you know better, a part of you still wants to believe that what you had was special enough to bring them back.

That emotional tug-of-war is what makes “SOVEREIGN LAND” so real. Jessie captures the frustration of knowing you should move forward while still being emotionally attached to someone who might not be looking back. It’s toxic, it’s vulnerable, and it’s the kind of honesty that makes her music so easy to connect with.

Overall, “SOVEREIGN LAND” is relatable and feels fresh, and I’m impatiently waiting for her to drop the album. If these recent singles are any indication of what’s coming, I’m ready to be emotionally compromised all over again.
