Wiz Khalifa Blends Indie Rock and Hip-Hop on “The Calm”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This feels like such a refreshing track.

Wiz Khalifa said something I really respected: being independent was cool, but the major-label system is his bag. Sometimes, knowing what works for you is half the battle. Now signed with 10K Projects, he’s preparing to release Cool on November 13. “The Calm” gives us a taste.

I f**king hate saying this because somebody says it every time Wiz sounds comfortable, but this reminds me of his old Kush & Orange Juice s**t. The production has sly indie-rock vibes that sound perfect for the closing credits of an ’80s horror movie.

Wiz comes through with a steady flow, his usual assertive-but-cool approach, and bars about big pockets, bad b*tches, and good sticky icky icky. . Jae Harp’s sung chorus adds to that indie-rock feel.

All in all, “The Calm” is an absolute vibe. It gives Wiz an interesting backdrop while keeping everything I enjoy about him intact. I’m definitely running this one back.
