Jacob Lusk just brought his talents to “My Guy.”
“My Guy” is a track on Sam Smith’s album Hazel Eyes, where Sam sings about a pure, secure love with their lover: their “guy.” This remix adds Jacob Lusk, and I have mixed feelings.
Jacob Lusk is never going to make anything worse. His voice is phenomenal. That’s why I wanted more of it. He didn’t get to showcase it much here. “My Guy” is an understated track, but I was hoping that a remix of it would give such an extraordinary vocalist the space to shine. He sounded great, but I spent the entire time waiting for the track to build.
“My Guy” is a sweet song, but it wasn’t really my favorite on Hazel Eyes. Since it’s not particularly complicated, there are a lot of options when it’s remixed, but instead, it sounds basically the same, with the criminally underutilized vocals of Jacob Lusk. It wasn’t bad by any means, but I had to listen a couple more times to see if I missed something. It was just the Sam Smith song with a few lyrics sung by Jacob Lusk.
I haven’t found myself coming back to “My Guy” particularly frequently since the release of Hazel Eyes, but I assumed this remix would change that. It didn’t. It’s still a sweet song, and Jacob Lusk sounds fantastic, but even the lyrics are the same, and the production is almost identical. I don’t see the point of a remix if there isn’t a new idea in there, and the only new idea is to add a phenomenal vocalist and underutilize his talents. It’s a sweet song, but I felt let down by the remix.
