Doechii Delivers a Glossy Pop Experiment With “LOCK JAW”

Rating: 3 out of 5.

No one is better at sounding bipolar than Doechii.

Doechii has been feeding us nonstop lately, and I’m not entirely sure what got into her. I’m not complaining, though. What stands out is how different these songs sound. One minute, she’s rapping like a madwoman; the next, she’s trying something completely unexpected. On “LOCK JAW,” she goes further left than El Sayed.

The production we get on “LOCK JAW” is glittery, upbeat, glamorous, and heart-pumping. This is bubblegum pop that would make PinkPantheress put up 50 before halftime.

Doechii matches that backdrop with a performance that refuses to sit still. She moves between melodic singing, high-pitched Sailor Moon vocals, and a bratty delivery that sounds ready to argue over absolutely nothing. Her emotions shift with every turn, but the energy keeps everything connected.

Is this my favorite Doechii song? Probably not. Still, I applaud the fearlessness. “LOCK JAW” shows another side of an artist determined to keep us guessing.
