The Weeknd Honors Faye Wong’s “Monsoon” With “Hong Kong”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The Weeknd is a real one for releasing this track.

The Weeknd has something special for his Asian listeners. Following his Hong Kong shows, he released “Hong Kong,” an Asia-exclusive track (that we somehow got our hands on) that samples Faye Wong’s 1993 Cantonese hit “Monsoon.” He first performed it at Kai Tak Stadium on October 24, giving the tribute a fitting introduction.

The production is gorgeous and dramatic, with a grandiosity that makes every note feel important. Personally, I could hear this going crazy at one of the Vietnamese karaoke parties I’ve attended.

The Weeknd delivers magical vocals, bringing a tenderness that fits the atmosphere beautifully. Faye Wong’s sampled vocals follow, adding another emotional texture to the concoction. It’s a lovely pairing, even though this isn’t a newly recorded duet.

Would I add it to my everyday rotation right away? Probably not. Still, “Hong Kong” is impressive, and the performance makes the tribute feel thoughtful. That’s the word I would use here: thoughtful.
