Bobby Shmurda Switches Up His Flow With “Broke My Heart”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

It’s Bobby b*tch.

The excitement surrounding Bobby Shmurda’s release from jail has faded, and I’ll be honest: I haven’t been checking for his music lately. Still, he has enough personality to catch my attention again. His Off The Ramp freestyle, “Broke My Heart,” managed to do that.

Though it’s labeled a freestyle, the structure and recurring refrain make it feel like a proper song. The production is fire, pairing a moody atmosphere with enough knock to keep your head moving. Little vocal flourishes give the backdrop some extra catchiness, too.

Bobby takes a surprisingly chill approach, using a simple flow that occasionally sounds like he bit his tongue and decided to finish the session anyway. His lyrics reveal a more vulnerable side, reminding us that even somebody with his tough image can get hurt and turn into a lover boy.

The vibes are there, and the raps are entertaining. The execution is just slightly off. Nonetheless, the track did get me to press play, so that’s something.
